    Testimonial

Izzy Bishop, UCL Lecturer in Ecology, winner of the Sustainable Teaching Award 2025 took this course in April 2025 and had this to say:

“One challenge I’ve faced in my job as a university lecturer in environmental science over the past 5 years is how to quickly integrate students from different cultures into the learning environment we try to create in the UK. As a teacher, I want to encourage students to embrace complexity and move away from the idea that there’s always a “right” answer. This year I tried opening my first lecture with the ground rules/ways of being from human systems dynamics (a core part of this course). I’m also modelling them in the way I teach. I’ve noticed that the students feel a lot more comfortable to embrace topics they don’t know, and to sit in the problem rather than immediately seeking a solution.”

What if you could do that with your department? With your colleagues? With your clients?

What difference might that make to your work together?

Part 1: The problem with the problem

A useful tool to describe your problem. One that gets at the essence.

A process that helps you clarify what is missing for you in the dynamics of the problem.

An initial look at the absurd/surprising/funny difference between what good looks like, and what is there now.

Part 2: The patterns in the problem

A new way to conceptualise the problem you brought. One that focuses on patterns.

An ancient practice to increase compassion in the patterns.

A comedy exercise which helps you notice the differences in expectation and reality.

Part 3: The peace in the patterns

A tool to notice key dependencies in the patterns.

A somatic exploration of a key pattern. Find out what your body knows about this issue. Bring that to the conscious level.

A topic, a premise and a punchline walk into a bar. With an emphasis on creating a compassionate premise.

Part 4: The punchlines for progress

An exploration of jokes as a method to expand and inspire fresh thinking, engagement and action.

    A celebration of useful insights.

A clarification of an exciting next step.

    The 3 Cs

This course weaves together years of experience with three harmonious practices:

    1. Complexity practice, from Human Systems Dynamics. A practical body of work to navigate complexity developed over 30 years with organisations around the world.
    2. Compassion practice from over 10 years of teaching a loving form of stand up comedy to hundreds of people across 11 countries, with some useful, ancient Buddhism practices around compassion thrown in.
    3. Comedy practice, from that same practice of teaching a loving form of stand up comedy (called Sustainable Stand Up) to people working on climate or social issues.

Combined together, we are equipped to perceive and work with more information about our issue, infuse our responses with more love, and share the patterns of our issue in funny, memorable and engaging ways.

  • Where does the course content come from?

Complexity. I am a certified Human Systems Dynamics Professional (HSD), and I have had the delight of engaging with Glenda Eoyang, Royce Holladay, and their Human Systems Dynamics practice for years. The complexity tools and mindsets for this course are from HSD.

Compassion. I am part of Sangha (practitioner group) led by Jungian analyst Rachael Wooten working with compassion practice from Tibetan Buddhism as well as other faith traditions. The compassion part of this course comes from that, as well as from my experience of teaching my compassionate comedy course.

Comedy. Ten years ago, I designed and started teaching my compassionate comedy course Sustainable Stand Up. I still do. The comedy part from this course comes from insights gained from running that course over 50 times online and in 11 countries.
